Asiyah on the world wide web

For the final project, Asiyah had to create a website. The website was used to promote her P.R writing skills, resume, editing skills, and creative writing pieces. We were instructed to use Dreamweaver, like most assents in this class she never used that before. With the help of this assignment, she became comfortable using the application. The website shows how diverse she is. The website reflects  work that she is  proud of. In the bio on the contact pages it allows users to get an inside look on who Asiyah is. On the website, there are writing pieces written when she was an intern for the Alzheimer’s Association. There are a media release, email release, fact sheet, donation paper, and email pitch. Since that is a career that Asiyah wants to pursue, they are apart of her website.

Social media plays a huge role in the website. Social media helped  build the website. It allows the website have more substance.  There are links to all of her professional social media accounts. There is a link to Twitter, Blogger, and Youtube. The blog allows users, employers, and potential clients to see Asiyah's writing skills and opinions on certain topics. The Twitter allows users to see how Asiyah can act professionally on a social network. The Youtube allows users to see the editing and storytelling skills. Social media is a big part of Asiyah's career and social life and Asiyah is glad to have found a way she can share it professionally and personally. Since social media is tied to the website it gives people different ways of communicating with Asiyah.

When given the task to create a website, was a little intimidated. Asiyah wasn’t confident in creating the website, coding, and, creating web-ready photos. With the help of the videos, she was able to do it just fine. It consisted of covering pdf’s to jpg's, saving files, and linking them together. Her first time doing it was difficult. She stopped and started the videos over and over. With practice, it became easy to do. Asiyah would have the videos playing in real-time in the background and follow what was being said. Sometimes she would anticipate the next step Asiyah had to do and do it before it was mentioned in the video. Since we had to have 10 pieces to showcase on the website, things began to become relative and easy.

Overall, designing the website was a rewarding experience. When Asiyah finished my website she felt accomplished because she doubted that she could do it. After creating my website she noticed I had a spelling error in her header and she had to create a new one. Asiyah changed it on her portfolio and not her index. There wasn’t a video that told her how to fix it but she just thought to delete the code of the other header and just enter the new header. Little problems for this website became simple. While getting more familiar with creating a website on Dreamweaver, you get a better understanding of what to do. It was a great experience learning how to create a website, coding, and editing on photoshop. Asiyah appreciate that she has a place to showcase her work.

Quarantine Student Reflection

Creating a Youtube video may seem glamorous, but it involves a lot of work. It consists of coming up with a theme, editing, and music. Creating a movie and trailer was a great experience. Learning how to create and edit video is something that Asiyah would have never thought to do on her own. Asiyah used iMovie to create her file and it was easy. She enjoyed putting the clips together into a storyline that flowed. She feels that she used a unique theme, she titled it Covid Dream because this reality still doesn’t seem real. Hopefully like the movie this dream ends.

A few complications arose with the production of this project. When Asiyah was trying to come up with a creative theme for my movie. She wanted to come up with something that would allow viewers to understand what every day is like for me. Another difficulty was how to put the clips together. She didn’t have a lot of experience with iMovie or Adobe Premiere. She found videos on how to edit on youtube and used that as a guide for creating my movie. With the help of those videos, she learned how to use transitional edits. Asiyah also learned how to add music to the movie. Another challenging part of making a video on iMovie was figuring out how to properly convert the video into a file that could post on Youtube. She had to convert the movie too MOV. After discovering how to do it, it became easy. Most of this project was about learning new techniques.

Using video as a way to communicate can be really effective. Instead of telling your audience with words what you're trying to convey, it can be shown. In Asiyah's movie “Covid Dream,” she didn’t use any dialog. She showed herself sleeping and used an edit to let the audience know it was a dream. At the end of the movie, She woke up and the music changed. She used that technique in case the edit into the dream wasn’t clear to the audience. Another way she communicated with video is with the glove. Throughout the movie she showed herself  using a glove to open the door, get her ticket, hold on to the rail. That may communicate to the viewer that she is trying to stay safe during the pandemic. Another way she used video to communicate was cleaning the doorknobs.

In my movie, Asiyah showed herself sleeping and used an edit that would interpret that it’s a dream. She show ed herself going down the stairs and onto her  computer to go to class. She used her hand being in a glove as a theme. Before Covid, we wouldn’t wear gloves in our everyday life. In her movie, there are clips where she is wearing gloves to protect myself. She used them to open the door, pretend to hold the rail and to give and receive the ticket from the conductor. Another  technique she used to interpret a Covid student was showing the 6ft separation at the train station. Before Covid, we weren’t instructed to stay 6ft apart from each other and now we are. Signs are showing that we have to stay 6ft apart to stop the spread of the virus. She also showed the city and some people wearing a mask and others not. This is a vital part of living in a pandemic. Some people feel that wearing a mask is unnecessary and don’t wear it.

The public nature of the content of this video did not seem to affect the movie theme, it enhanced it. Since the theme was “quarantine student,”Asiyah showed myself learning from home, social distancing, temperature checks, and wearing gloves. She showed some people wearing a mask and some not wearing masks. The public nature also shows why we're still in quarantine.

Since the assignment was to show what the quarantine experience is like as a student, the movie may not be exciting. Asiyah does the same things every day, and it's boring. She wanted to challenge herself and make an interesting movie out of my repetitive life. With the help of editing and music its easy to bring life into a movie. The music embarked excitement. The music made the movie more interesting to watch. Asiyah enjoyed creating this movie. She thinks she did a good job with coming up with a theme that made sense for a short film. Asiyah enjoyed creating this movie and now she has some knowledge on how to edit videos.

Is Twitter more effective than the News?

Twitter is a social media platform that allows its users to connect with companies and people to share thoughts. Over time, Twitter has become a place to receive news as well. Twitter allows its users to become a part of the news. The users post about something that is going on, upload photos, and give opinions on what's happening. That tweet may be seen by the user's followers allowing them to retweet it and the tweet thread continues to grow. That allows more people to see it and more opinions on the topic.

Twitter can be used as an organizational tool. Users create tweets to bring awareness to a topics. According to “Here’s what we can learn from how Twitter responded to Paris” by Alexandra Siegel. “As the details of the deadly coordinated terrorist attacks that wracked the French capital Friday evening began to emerge, heads of state, religious leaders, celebrities, and average citizens around the world took social media by storm.” Celebrities made hashtags to bring awareness to the terror attack that took place in Paris. Since celebrities were tweeting about it more people cared. This made people formulate their thoughts on what happened. Another way Twitter is more effective than the news because it allows its users to meet. During the Egyptian Revolution, millions of protesters from a range of socio-economic and religious backgrounds demanded the overthrow of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Twitter was used to coordinate. According to “Egypt five years on: was it ever a 'social media revolution” by Maeve Shearlaw, “the hashtag #I_participated_in_January_Revolution had become the center of an online battle between the supporters of the revolution and those who opposed it.” Protesters were on the streets and online making it world news. Twitter allowed people from all over the world to connect and see what was taking place in Egypt.

Most people don’t have time to sit down and wait for news stories. They want it instantly. Since Twitter is always updating its users are always getting up to date news. The election was very popular on Twitter. On election, day influencers were telling their followers to go out and vote. On election night there were polls of who was winning, tweets about the protest, and tweets about rigged votes. Twitter wasn’t successful inaccurate information about the election. Twitter was successful in making people go out and vote. Another popular event on Twitter was the pandemic. Twitter was used to scare the public into staying home, social distancing, and wearing a mask. Twitter was successful in communicating the importance of being safe during the pandemic. Another way Twitter was an effective communicator was on the black lives matter movement #BLM. Twitter created a hashtag that allowed people to connect. That hashtag is still effective to this day and is still being used to bring awareness to the black lives matter movement.

The focus of the Twitter project was to know all celebrity gossip. The accounts that were followed were TMZ and The Shade Room. Those accounts only focus on celebrity news and gossip. They often get exclusive information on things going on in celebrity's lives. The other account followed was Donald Trump, to see his perspective on things. I would have never followed his account if it wasn’t for the project.

Tweeting and blog posts are completely different. Twitter is more relaxed and uses fewer words. This was Asiyah's first time on Twitter so she enjoyed the experience of seeing what it was like. Since she is a Public Relations major it was good to understand how other social media networks work.

conducting a WikiHow page

WikiHow allows its users to create an article on a technique or topic in which they feel they are experts. The website aims to create the most helpful how-to instructions to allow anyone in the world to learn how to accomplish anything. Wikihow provides steps, pictures, warning’s, and tips on the topic they are writing about. Writing steps for this project was difficult. Not using “I” or “you”, is a hard habit to stop. It comes naturally especially when writing step by step instructions.  This project was a challenge. It tests the ability to pay attention to details, writing clearly, and briefly.

Pictures speak a thousand words. They are very helpful to WikiHow pages. It brings life to WikiHow pages. It communicates to the reader how something should look. Pictures, warning and tips go hand and hand. Taking pictures was a difficult component to this project. The photos for this project had to be taken horizontally. Normally when taking pictures with a phone they are taken vertically. Making sure pictures are included in every step was a task. This recipe is made so often it’s hard to remember the person reading the article may not have experience cooking. It is important to make sure that the pictures are communicating what is being done in the photo. The pictures help and not hinder the reader. The easiest parts of the WikiHow project was the the word count. The instructions had to be detailed but brief. The project had to have at least 450 words.

Since pictures are used to communicate what something should look like, warnings and tips tell the reader things they should look out for. The use of tips is to tell the reader how they can achieve great results from the steps. Since the instructions have to be brief, tips may guide the reader in the right direction. The tips may tell the reader something that wasn’t worth mentioning in the article but needed to be said.Warnings are extremely important in a WikiHow project. The warnings tell the reader what to look out for and what to avoid. Since this may be the readers first time doing the task, there may be somethings that they don’t know.

Another important step in a wikihow project is the coding. When publishing, a wikihow page   it needs coding. Coding is a system of symbols and rules used to represent instructions. The code to "How to cook Rasta Pasta”, is code from another WikiHow recipe, “ How to cook pasta with red sauce.”For this project we were instructed to use coding from another wiki how similar to the one we were publishing. That was a unique element to this project, going behind the scenes of the website. It was also easy, it was just replacing what the original post was with the one being written. During this part of the project proof reading is important. It is very easy to make a mistake while coding.

HELP IM ALWAYS POSTING !

buffalo state college

Social media used to be a place to keep up with friends and family. It dates back to 1997 when the first social media website was created “Six Degrees”. Since then many social media platforms have been created Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram along with many others. With more ways to “stay connected” the more intrusive they became.

Often after browsing a search engine, an ad appears that is identical to what has been searched. Sites like Facebook and Google partner up and resell the user's personal information. Even a simple tweet or Facebook post is saved to collect information on its users. Social media uses creative ways to obtain information on its users. Snapchat has a feature where users can locate all their friends on a map. This feature can be turned off, but why would they allow an application like that? Are we that obsessed with being in touch?

Social media users have to be careful when on these sites. In today's society users feel an urge to update friends on everything they do. They often tag the location of where they are to appear superior. Users often post too much and it comes back to haunt them. In many cases, as we get older we develop into different people. We may not feel the same about situations from 10 years prior. We may forget but, once it's posted it's there forever.

In 2019 it was announced the well-known comedian Kevin Hart was the host of the Academy Awards. He had to step down from the position once homophobic tweets resurfaced. According to Stephan Daw at Billboard, “Hart made a number of jokes over the course of two years on his Twitter page about LGBTQ people. Some were aimed around his thoughts about how he would react to potentially having a gay son, in which the comedian said he would break a dollhouse over his head if he saw him playing with it.” The tweets were made between 2010-2011. When it was announced that he was going to be the host the Academy Awards and Kevin were met with extreme backlash. Kevin Hart has addressed the issue. He did not host the award show. The LQBTQ community is strong and powerful. This incident shows how easy posts in the past can be found. Many influencers can learn from his experience and try to avoid offensive posts. Hart’s results were missing out on an opportunity. Social media plays a huge role in a lot of our lives but some things don't need to be posted.

Through time social media is just going to find more creative ways to become more intrusive. Social media makes its users obsessed with updating people on everything. It used to be a fun way to stay connected but it's turning to a way to obsess over people. As we evolve so does social media, but we don’t have to allow them to make us captivated over people's lives . When will we understand something are better left offline?
