Twitter is a social media platform that allows its users to connect with companies and people to share thoughts. Over time, Twitter has become a place to receive news as well. Twitter allows its users to become a part of the news. The users post about something that is going on, upload photos, and give opinions on what's happening. That tweet may be seen by the user's followers allowing them to retweet it and the tweet thread continues to grow. That allows more people to see it and more opinions on the topic.
Twitter can be used as an organizational tool. Users create tweets to bring awareness to a topics. According to “Here’s what we can learn from how Twitter responded to Paris” by Alexandra Siegel. “As the details of the deadly coordinated terrorist attacks that wracked the French capital Friday evening began to emerge, heads of state, religious leaders, celebrities, and average citizens around the world took social media by storm.” Celebrities made hashtags to bring awareness to the terror attack that took place in Paris. Since celebrities were tweeting about it more people cared. This made people formulate their thoughts on what happened. Another way Twitter is more effective than the news because it allows its users to meet. During the Egyptian Revolution, millions of protesters from a range of socio-economic and religious backgrounds demanded the overthrow of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Twitter was used to coordinate. According to “Egypt five years on: was it ever a 'social media revolution” by Maeve Shearlaw, “the hashtag #I_participated_in_January_Revolution had become the center of an online battle between the supporters of the revolution and those who opposed it.” Protesters were on the streets and online making it world news. Twitter allowed people from all over the world to connect and see what was taking place in Egypt.
Most people don’t have time to sit down and wait for news stories. They want it instantly. Since Twitter is always updating its users are always getting up to date news. The election was very popular on Twitter. On election, day influencers were telling their followers to go out and vote. On election night there were polls of who was winning, tweets about the protest, and tweets about rigged votes. Twitter wasn’t successful inaccurate information about the election. Twitter was successful in making people go out and vote. Another popular event on Twitter was the pandemic. Twitter was used to scare the public into staying home, social distancing, and wearing a mask. Twitter was successful in communicating the importance of being safe during the pandemic. Another way Twitter was an effective communicator was on the black lives matter movement #BLM. Twitter created a hashtag that allowed people to connect. That hashtag is still effective to this day and is still being used to bring awareness to the black lives matter movement.
The focus of the Twitter project was to know all celebrity gossip. The accounts that were followed were TMZ and The Shade Room. Those accounts only focus on celebrity news and gossip. They often get exclusive information on things going on in celebrity's lives. The other account followed was Donald Trump, to see his perspective on things. I would have never followed his account if it wasn’t for the project.
Tweeting and blog posts are completely different. Twitter is more relaxed and uses fewer words. This was Asiyah's first time on Twitter so she enjoyed the experience of seeing what it was like. Since she is a Public Relations major it was good to understand how other social media networks work.
